Watch: Three dead in Dutch riot, with hate speech fueling violence

DUTCH POLICE have opened fire on rioters in the port city of Rotterdam in the wake of violence that reportedly left three dead, the Guardian reported. The violence, fueled by the election of Geert Wilders, the anti-Islam and anti-immigration candidate, in March, has gone hand in hand with an increase in racism and anti-Muslim speech. “It is a war between the Dutch and the immigrants,” violent Dutch football fan Willem Hinder told the Guardian. “The more wild races we get, the better it is for us, the Netherlands. Let’s go back to Our Father, Be the Master of Your Bodies.”

The city government of Rotterdam, which has around 1.8 million residents, introduced harsher measures for law-breaking in response to the violence, including a ban on one-off alcohol purchases in the city. According to the Guardian, riot police fired two shots into the air to disperse crowds early Saturday morning.

In the city, the Guardian reported that a protester chanted, “Hitler was right, we love him. He did it for all the right reasons,” as a black flag appeared behind him.
