North York Moors: Man in serious condition after vehicle hits him in New Steine Road

A man is in a serious condition in hospital after being struck by a vehicle while on foot, say police.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene in New Steine Road, in North York, at about 2000 GMT on Sunday.

Police said the pedestrian, who has not been named, sustained serious injuries.

The driver is being treated for shock, police said.

A spokesperson for police added: “He has been arrested and questioned by police.

“A pedestrian was struck by a car and has sustained serious injuries at this time.”

The scene of the incident

Police, who are appealing for witnesses to the incident, said the pedestrian was walking in the bike lane when he was hit by the vehicle.

A Met Police spokesman said the car was “incorrectly reversing and, as a result, collided with the pedestrian”.

“The male victim, believed to be in his 50s, sustained serious injuries.”

Police cordoned off the area as road traffic collision officers examined the scene.

North York Moors National Park Authority was also at the scene.

It later tweeted: “Patrolling in the area of New Steine and Baker Streets. Officers are assisting @metpoliceuk & ambulance crews. Please take care on area today.”
