Documentary shows racism of Austin police force

Just when you thought you had seen the best AP footage of Austin Police Department agents smashing the windows of recreational vehicles on Valentine’s Day, a recording on the local Austin Police website gives another slap in the face. The video, called “60 Minutes Informed” and narrated by investigative reporter Megan Twohey, takes a look at just how diverse the force is, and how many of its officers come from minority backgrounds.

It also walks through the number of homicides in Austin the past year, which are nearly double the number for the same period in 2011.

As Twohey points out, the area hasn’t had this many homicides in a single year since at least the 1970s, and her new take on the community’s policing is sure to make waves for exposing how incongruous a police force that is 83% white looks in a modern, diverse society.

The blog post is worth a read, even if the video of ODS agents breaking through the front windows of RVs is. Check it out here.
